McLean County, Bloomington-Normal's Metropolitan Statistical Area, is the largest county in the state, covering more than 1,183 square miles of some of the richest farmland in the world. More than 20 rural communities dot the countryside, complementing Bloomington-Normal's metropolitan flavor. Large or small, each community is important to the area’s development and is an intricate part of the county’s economy.
In keeping pace with economic trends, McLean County has diversified its local economy by attracting assorted industries and fostering new businesses to complement its agricultural background. In addition, the county has actively worked to enhance quality of life factors to draw in new residents.
Residential preference surveys taken over the last 20 years show that there is a reservoir of urbanites who say they would prefer to live in a rural, small town environment than in a large city.
