Labor Market

The Bloomington-Normal marketplace is characterized as a largely white-collar workplace. The dominant industry is insurance with State Farm corporate headquarters leading the way through the number employed (14,315) and COUNTRY Insurance and Financial Services with over 2,200 employees. In addition, the Bloomington-Normal market is a regional banking center with many local, regional and national banking interests represented.

The largest manufacturing employer is Mitsubishi Motors Manufacturing of North America. This manufacturing plant, located on the west side of Normal, employs nearly 2,000 associates and manufactures several models for Mitsubishi including the Eclipse, Eclipse Spyder, Endeavor and Galant.  The workers at this plant are considered some of the most highly skilled and efficient in the industry.

Another dominant sector employing a large number of workers and highly skilled people is education. Higher education (Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, Heartland Community College and Lincoln College), together with pre-kindergarten through high school, employs over 7,500 people.
