Commerce Bank President, J Phillips

On episode #55 of the Building BN podcast, BNEDC CEO Patrick Hoban and Community Marketing Manager, Whitney Chesher sit down to speak with Commerce Bank President, J Phillips. Phillips is the current BNEDC Board Vice-Chairperson.

A native of the Bloomington-Normal area, Phillips leads the Bloomington-Normal market in growing and retaining clients for Commerce Bank. His over 15-year career spans all areas of the bank including retail banking, wealth management, private banking, and commercial banking. Phillips has a history of recognition for exceptional work and has been awarded several Commerce Bank and community awards including 40 Leaders Under 40 by InterBusiness Issues (iBi).  Phillips graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale with a BS in aviation management, with a specialty in airport management and planning. He is also a certified commercial pilot and part-time flight instructor.  Phillips and his wife Crystal live in Bloomington-Normal and have 2 children, Liam and Piper.

Commerce Bank, according to Phillips, has been operating in Bloomington-Normal for over 150 years and is currently the 35th largest bank in the country. Their retail business is mainly in the Midwest, but their payment processing business is nationwide and rivals heavyweight companies like JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America when it comes to card issuance. The company has been managed by relatives from the same family for 6 generations.
